How it works

Step 2. Meet an independent caregiver on AfterDoula, and choose them.
Step 3. Your caregiver arrives already briefed. You wake to the night written down.

What the law says in Washington
No one checks the caregiver unless you do.
Washington licenses care outside a child's own home, so a night nanny or postpartum doula in your home is license-exempt. The law requires no check on the caregiver. On AfterDoula, the caregiver will complete a background check before the first booking.
Seattle's Domestic Workers Ordinance covers nannies whether they are employees or independent: a minimum wage of $21.30 an hour in 2026, a rest break every four hours and a meal period over five, or extra pay when a break is impossible at 3 a.m. From 1 July 2027 the statewide Domestic Workers Bill of Rights adds written agreements and notice before ending the work.
The Apple Health doula benefit pays for birth doulas and a few postpartum visits. It does not pay for overnight care.
Five questions mothers in Seattle ask
When does AfterDoula open in Seattle?
After Boise and Missoula. Join the waitlist with your due date and ZIP code and we write the day the app is live in King County. Caregivers in Seattle can join the same list.
Night nanny or postpartum doula: which do I need?
A night nanny takes the night with your baby. A postpartum doula tends you by day: recovery, feeding, meals, the house. On AfterDoula one caregiver can do both. You choose the hours, and the caregiver learns your house once.
Who checks the caregiver in Washington?
Washington law requires no check on a caregiver in your own home. On AfterDoula every caregiver completes a background check before the first booking, and the date is on their profile. Pediatric CPR and safe sleep training are verified too.
What does Seattle’s domestic worker law mean for a night nanny?
Your night nanny is owed the Seattle minimum wage, breaks or pay in place of them, and, from July 2027, a written agreement. AfterDoula’s bookings state hours and pay in writing from the first night.
Does Apple Health cover a postpartum doula?
Apple Health covers birth doulas, up to $3,500 per client, with limited postpartum visits. Nights are not covered. Ask your employer or your health plan what it reimburses.
