How it works

  1. Step 1. Tell us your due date and the days or nights you want, and write your House Brief.

  2. Step 2. Meet an independent caregiver on AfterDoula, and choose them.

  3. Step 3. Your caregiver arrives already briefed. You wake to the night written down.

What the law says in Montana

No one checks the caregiver unless you do.

Montana counts care in a child's home as a daycare facility only for state payment registration, so private in-home night care is unlicensed. The law requires no check on the caregiver. On AfterDoula, the caregiver will complete a background check before the first booking.

From 1 January 2027, Montana requires anyone practicing as a doula to hold a state license from the Department of Labor and Industry, and the definition covers the twelve months after birth. AfterDoula opens in Montana after that date and checks for the license.

Montana Medicaid stopped reimbursing doulas in April 2026.

Five questions mothers in Missoula ask

When does AfterDoula open in Missoula?

In 2027, after Boise. Join the waitlist with your due date and ZIP code and we write the day the app is live in your town. Caregivers in Missoula can join the same list, so the first families have a choice on day one.

Do doulas need a license in Montana?

Yes, from 1 January 2027, under Senate Bill 319. Ask any doula for their license. AfterDoula checks for it. Whether the rule reaches a caregiver who works only as a night nanny is not settled yet.

Night nanny or postpartum doula: which do I need?

A night nanny takes the night with your baby. A postpartum doula tends you by day: recovery, feeding, meals, the house. On AfterDoula one caregiver can do both. You choose the hours, and the caregiver learns your house once.

Who checks the caregiver in Montana?

Montana law requires no check on a caregiver in your own home. On AfterDoula every caregiver completes a background check before the first booking, and the date is on their profile. Pediatric CPR and safe sleep training are verified too.

Does Montana Medicaid cover doulas?

It did until April 2026, when Medicaid cuts halted reimbursement. Plan on paying privately. Ask your employer or your health plan what it reimburses.
